To give credit to Matthew, he is just following Trent the way the Church tells him he should. He's being consistent - while many Catholics downplay Trent in an attempt to be more ecumenical.

Actually, it's now Catholic dogma to downplay Trent, since Vatican 2 pretty much retracted the anathemas by calling us "separated brethren" and saying Muslims and Jews are worshiping the same God. So much for never retracting dogma.
Yep, the two do seem to be in tension, don't they?
